Pastoral Council recommends doing the Coin Drive after the summer because the “Rice Bowl” finishes the week after Easter and May is too soon to do something similar. Then we have the summer which is usually very slow and there is a high turnover of parish members. Mary’s Haven will have their membership drive in May. Dues are $12 per year. The Wee House is FINISHED! Susie gave a tour for those interested after the Pastoral Council meeting. And yes, it looks awesome! Hopefully the “Earn While You Learn” program will get going soon. Regina McMillan called and reported that over 40 people participated in the parish clean-up. On May 17, 2009, they will host a blood pressure reading between the two masses. The newsletter should be out this week. Father reported that the canned good drive for the Autauga Interfaith Care Center (AICC) was a success. The center itself still needs volunteers and probably even more in the future. There is an adoration chapel available at the Marbury Convent (directions: Take Hwy 31 north to Hwy 20, turn right and the convent is on the left before the high school – approximately 17 miles). Frank Miliano attended the meeting as a Guest. He spoke to the council on behalf of the Knights of Columbus and the Bocce Ball Court project. After the Knights took a closer look at the proposed site approved by the Council, they decided that this location would not work. Therefore, they are requesting permission to build the court in a new location which is across the creek (and bridge) and on a flat area towards the back of the field. There is no cost difference. Jim Hughes made a motion that the Pastoral Council approve the move, and Faith Ostrye seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
The basket for the AICC Canned Goods Donation is in JoAnn Durham’s office. Paul Lohman said he would contact Mark Barrett to get the ball rolling on having a “Canned Goods Sunday”, possibly quarterly, in support of AICC.
Regina McMillan reported that the weekend of recruiting parish members to assist with grounds maintenance was very successful. She passed out guidelines that were given to the folks and a copy is attached to these meeting minutes. She created a schedule for grass mowing and through volunteer sign-ups, the entire summer is covered. She is still in need of a gas blower (electric won’t work), and a lawnmower or two. In addition, if anyone has hand tools to donate, that would be appreciated. There will be no more “borrowing” of the lawn equipment for personal use off the church grounds. Group projects are allowable with Father’s permission.
JoAnn Durham reviewed the requirements for the upcoming St. Joseph’s Day Celebration on March 22, 2009. She also passed out a calendar of upcoming events. Both are attached to the meeting minutes.
Confirmation is March 29, 2009.
Parish Picnic. JoAnn has received requests to make the picnic more of a parish festival. Lots of planning and participation will be needed by organizations and parish members to expand the picnic into a festival.
Sister Jane reported that the Health and Wellness Committee is planning on hosting a guest speaker on nutrition on March 19, 2009 in the evening. Time and place will be announced as we get closer.
Newsletter. Thanks for all the input and Sister Jane is working to get the next issue out.
Father announced that he may be leaving us soon for another assignment. Our parish is now considered an “open parish” in order to find a replacement. Normally, priests stay at a parish 6 years and they may request a 6 year extension. Father has been here for the first 6 years, and has 2 years left to go on his 6-year extension. However, considering the building loan and project has been paid in full, and that the parish members are looking forward to the next project, Father felt that this should be handled by the next priest.
Meager meals will begin this Friday. NO MEAT in the soups, please.
Coffee and Donuts in March will be hosted by the Pastoral Council.
March 23, 2009, there will be a Penance Service.
Larry Skeens led closing prayer.

They are shooting for one event per month. “Go Red” this weekend for heart health. They are exploring the need for a machine that checks your blood pressure. There are at least 10 people on the committee and 3 leaders. Father McKenna reminded everyone that confirmation is at 11 am on March 29, 2009. AICC meets local people’s needs. We do contribute economically and folks need to consider donating their time. The basket in the back of church is missing where food was donated that would be taken to AICC. There used to be a group of 14 individuals who would donate time, and now they are down to 4. The idea was presented to have a “Canned Good Sunday” quarterly. The parish needs an AICC representative. Jerry Cimis was present as a guest and presented the proposed budget to the Council for the upcoming fiscal year. There are approximately 165 accounts. Finance council found that historically funds receive end up being 15% above the pledged amount. Also, only 40% of the parish families respond during tithing, however 60% of the families make donations to the church. Historically, finance council went strictly by the amount that was pledged during the campaign. However, this year, finance council increased that amount by 5% in anticipation of receiving more money than pledged. Last year, there was approximately $20-25K in unexpected expenses such as health insurance, property insurance and casualty loses. Bolded items in the budget are larger amounts than what was contained in last year’s budget. Finance council did disagree with some of the requested inputs and Department Heads were invited to attend planning meetings. There is a 5% COLA increase to each of the salaried staff members. Some of the items in the budget are fixed and some are a function of tithing. It was decided to replace the maintenance supervisor with an all volunteer force. In the past, the church has had volunteers, then with the addition of the Family Life Center, the church moved to creating a paid position. When that person stepped down, the church once again hired a paid employee. However, this hasn’t worked entirely well either, so the church decided to go back to an all volunteer network for maintenance. Regina McMillan volunteered to head up this effort. In past years, finance council had to cut $40-60K from the budget in order to suggest a balanced budget to the pastoral council. There is a contingency fun available to fund high ticket maintenance items. The Building Fund Reserve is a separate account and has an approximate balance of $12K. The Deacon program is new and there is 1 year of discernment and then 4 years of training. We may have a few parish members in this program in the future. Barbara Smyth made a motion that we accept the budget as presented by finance council. Faith Ostrye seconded the motion. The motion passed. All contracts for admin employees were renewed with the exception of the maintenance superintendent. If the parish council finds that an all volunteer work force doesn’t work, then this subject will be reviewed again. Joe L’Abbe made a motion to accept all contract renewals with the exception of the maintenance superintendent. Kelly Zimmerman seconded the motion. The motion passed. The contract for the Music Minister was recommended for renewal. Susie Gaines made the motion to renew this contract, and Joanne Hamilton seconded this motion. The motion passed. The contracts for Religious Education personnel was also recommended for renewal. Everyone is working well together. Faith Ostrye made a motion to renew all RE contracts, Kelly Zimmerman seconded the motion. The motion passed. Sister Jane said she is working on a newsletter that should be out by Advent. The office is working to stuff the envelopes. Barbara Smyth asked for feedback on the meditation booklets that were being included in the mail out and the other items that are being sent out. Compliments were passed back to the pastoral council as to how warm and loving the parish family made visitors feel. The Church of the Living Water hosted a Thanksgiving Community Service and we need to participate. A collection is taken up and is used by the minister’s association Traveler’s Aid through the Police Station. This fund may provide for one night’s lodging and $20 for food and gasoline to folks who feel stranded as they pass through Prattville. On the first weekend of January, there will be a special celebration of the Three Kings at Mass. They will be introduced at the Children’s Christmas Party beforehand. There is a new schedule for Coffee and Donuts. There will be no donut-holes in the order. In addition, parish members no longer have to pay for the order and then get reimbursed. JoAnn Durham has made an agreement to pay each month directly to Winn Dixie. Volunteer Appreciation Dinner will be Thursday, at 6:30 pm. Closing Prayer was led by Faith Ostrye. Finance Council: Jerry Cimis will attend the meeting next month on November 18, 2008 to address budget questions. Every parish council member in attendance was given a draft budget to take home, review, and discuss at the next meeting. Those who were not in attendance received a copy in the mail along with a note stating that the budget will be discussed in November.
The monthly meeting for November has been changed from the “fourth” Tuesday to the “third” Tuesday due to the Thanksgiving Holiday week.
Mary’s Haven reported that they have received a good response to the Baby Bottle Campaign which kicked off earlier this month in October. They have opened the “Wee House” and the teens are coming to assist in getting the final items moved in. It won’t be completed before Archbishop Rodi comes for a visit, however, they should be open for business during the first week of November. They have had about 6-7 clients in the last few weeks. Once the House is set up, then the classes will begin and the program “Earn While You Learn” will be implemented.
Carol Keck, current President of the Altar Society reported that they meet from September to May, on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. Their Rummage Sale in October was once again very successful. Their other major fundraiser is the “Mother’s Day Basket” in the spring.
Lillian Boone from the Young At Heart reported that they meet Mondays after Mass until approximately 2:30 pm.
Larry Skeens reported that the Choir is growing and that they are working on a program for the 0800 Christmas Mass. Eddie moved away and Michelle also moved.
Jim Hughes reported that the Knights of Columbus will be participating at the mass for Archbishop Rodi and will be dressed up in full regalia. The collected donations for the children in Afghanistan are coming along well, and there are a few boxes that still need to be sent. The Ladies Auxiliary volunteered to send 5 boxes and the Knights of Columbus will also be sending 5 boxes which leaves approximately 10 boxes to be sponsored by individuals or other organizations within the church.
CFAC will be meeting on November 12, 2008. A suggestion was made by one of the parish families and was brought to the parish council to also have Religious Education on Wednesday evenings. Father fundamentally disagrees with this idea in order to keep the Sabbath Holy. RE is looking to put weekly lessons on the web to assist students who miss a class to catch up. RE is also looking into re-doing confirmation preparations. High School Life is looking for a permanent classroom and there was a discussion about re-distributing the different classroom assignments to accommodate this request. CFAC will take another look at this.
The Altar Society is giving the Teens a thank-you for helping them with the Rummage Sale.
There will be a Sock Hop in the spring.
Adult Education Classes are going well and they are held from 9:15 to 10:45 at the same time RE classes is being held for the children. The instructor, Case Allen, is awesome!
This year, the “Three Kings” will have greater emphasis through the Christmas Season. They will be present during the Children’s Christmas Party and then later again in early January.
Social Justice gave a written report.
PEVAC is looking for a chairperson (STILL!). They are working on getting information together for immediate shelter needs and will meet again on November 6, 2008.
Sister Jane reported on Health and Wellness. Debbie Duke from Birmingham came and gave a presentation. They received 143 responses from the survey they passed out. A Grief Ministry Meeting was also conducted and training will be combined with Montgomery.
Father reported that at the 11 o’clock mass, a visitor complimented the parish and its members about how they felt very welcome in the parish.
Parish members have a strong sense of family through volunteerism. Father pointed out that maybe we could be more efficient with more full time paid positions; however, the sense of “family” will be diminished. A careful balance between “efficiency vs. spirit and rapport” must be kept.
Spaghetti Dinner sponsored by the Knights of Columbus was a fair success. Food was delicious; however, the timing conflicted with a football game.
Many activities coming up in the future:
November 1, 2008 – visit from Archbishop Rodi November 20, 2008 – Volunteer Appreciation Dinner (please RSVP) November 21& 22, 2008 – Book and Bake Sale, Ladies Aux December 7, 2008 – Intergenerational (that means everyone invited) Christmas Party December 9, 2008 – Confessions December 14, 2008 – Our Lady of Guadalupe Celebration Bilingual Rosary is the first Saturday of every month.
Closing Prayer was led by Larry Skeens.
The meeting adjourned at 8:40 p.m.

Time and Talent (August 9 & 10, 2008) was a success. It is very important that all of the people who volunteered be personally contacted. The parish members who attended really enjoyed the food and the attendance was higher than in previous years. IF a ministry does not want to have a table, please let the Time and Talent Committee know next year so that the space can be allocated to another ministry. Blood Drive results: 24 people signed up adn 21 pints were collected. Success!
Blue Mass: Successful! There was coverage in the Prattville Progress, 3 vehicles from the fire department were there along with approximately 12 “first responders” participated. It was also featured on page 24 of the Catholic Weekly and WSFA News that evening. The Chief of Police from the city of Prattville participated. There were no active duty in uniform and no CERT members – need to concentrate on that next year. Special thanks to Darrell Ladnier and Wayne Young for their hard work in setting everything up.
The church office has complimentary LPGA tickets for the upcoming weekend event.
Finance Council: Joe L’Abbe reported that Jerry Cimis will be here for the budget presentation in November. Stewardship weekend will happen this upcoming weekend. Department Heads need to attend all budget meetings in October.
CFAC: They CFAC had a meeting and the budget for RE was discussed. They also discussed the importance of the Epiphany and will be placing more emphasis on this event during the mass in early January. There is an opening for the youth ministry. Jamie DelGado is joining the staff for Sr High Life.
Social Justice: PVAC (Prattville Volunteer Action Committee????) has met and they’re doing research to get the Parish ready in case of a natural disaster and emergency. They are looking for a volunteer from the Parish members to head this committee.
Mary’s Haven submitted a written report to the Parish Council (see attachment). Many members attended a dinner hosted by AL Right to Life at the RSA Activity center which featured Norma McCorvey who is “Roe” in Roe vs. Wade. She spoke about her life and her work in abortion centers which led to her moving “next door” to work at Operation Rescue. Also in attendance was Ed Clark, who converted to Catholicism, and is the founder of COPE.
Policies and Procedures: The Policies and Procedures distributed at the last meeting were discussed. One addition was recommended: In the Special Events paragraph, option (C) hold harmless waiver needs to be added. Larry Skeens moved to approve and accept the Policies and Procedures with the one addition, and Robin Hughes seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.
The Tea sponsored by the Ladies Aux was excellent. As a result, several additional parish members signed up to become members. The Knights also had several people sign up. It was more successful than time and talent!
The Parish Picnic was September 21, 2008. The attendance was very high. One new parish member made a comment to Father that they were surprised that everyone was “gone” by 2:30 pm. At their old parish, the picnic lasted all afternoon. Father also missed the children’s games. Once again, the Knights did an outstanding job cooking, and the Altar Society did a fine job in the kitchen. The decorations (done by the Elizabeth Ministry) were awesome!
Health and Wellness: Sister Jane reported that Debbie Duke is coming on October 9th to talk to the volunteers.
Grief Ministry: Approximately 5 or 6 volunteers signed up during Time and Talent. There will be a meeting on October 23, 2008.
Blessing of the Animals will be October 4, 2008 at 10 am.
Father McKenna reported that visitors are impressed by our various celebrations and that they are “done well.”
The new ArchBishop will be visiting our parish on November 1, 2008 Saturday after the 5 o’clock mass.
The Confirmation class is preparing, and will submit three dates around the first of the year. There is a possibility that ArchBishop Lipscomb may assist and be returning to the parish.
The “New Translations” are still being worked on and will not take place for a few years. The draft of the new text arrived in the parish for opinions. The new translation is more of a literal translation whereas the previous translation is more free form (Latin to English).
The Altar Society will hold their Rummage Sale on October 4, 2008. Set up will be over the entire week prior to the sale.
Mary’s Haven will start a Baby Bottle Campaign October 4/5, 2008.
There is a Liturgy Retreat on October 4, 2008 at 11:00 am.
Life Chain is October 5, 2008 at 2 pm at the corner of McQueen-Smith and .

Time and Talent (August 9 & 10, 2008) was a success. The “Flavors of St. Joseph” was a hit and there was a wide variety of ethnic dishes for the parish members to taste and enjoy. Special note to the Filipino community for their outstanding support. Robin Hughes and JoAnn Durham did a great job in the kitchen. The office took on the project of making the booklets that highlight the various organizations and ministries. A Review of Time and Talent will happen on September 9, 2008 at 5:30 pm.
Father wants everyone to be contacted personally because the feedback is STILL “no one called me.” This year, e-mail and phone messages are not good enough and will not be considered “contacted”. That’s not how it’s supposed to work. Gail Johnson made a request to the Parish Council that the Altar Society of St. Joseph’s be recognized for their hard work over the years via a “Resolution of Commendation to the St. Joseph’s Altar Society.” She presented and read the attached certificate to the meeting. Barbara Smythe made a motion that the Parish Council approve and support this recognition. Joanne Hamilton seconded the motion. It passed unanimously. The Resolution will be presented at the 11 o’clock Mass, September 21, 2008.
Gail Johnson also had a proposal to the council concerning the Disability Ministry (see attached).
Martha Marston conducted an awesome retreat for Parish Council Members in August. Unfortunately, only 6 members chose to attend. WE need to work on this.
The initial call for budget requests is September 1, 2008. The Parish Council set the priorities to the Finance Council as: Liturgy (includes Church Maintenance), Religious Education, and Social Justice – all being equal. Faith Ostrye made the motion to accept these three items as equals, Barbara Smythe seconded it. The motion passed unanimously. Joe L’Abbe spoke to Jerry Cimis who requested that all fund managers be reminded of the upcoming deadlines as the budget cycle begins again.
Kelly Niece is the main point of contact for Habitat For Humanity. As a result of Time and Talent, she now has a list of approximately 11 volunteers for this ministry.
Parish Council would like to have more reports from liaisons – Council members need to get in touch with their partners before the Parish Council meetings to bring updates and current status back to the meetings. Charles Gibson, Chairman, is going to make an effort to attend each ministry’s/organizations’ meeting.
Saturday, September 6, 2008 is going to be a Blue Mass in order to honor all of our First Responders in the Parish. This event is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus.
Sunday between the two Masses, the Ladies Auxiliary and the Knights of Columbus is sponsoring a “Tea” in order to educate parish members on what all these two organizations do.
The Liturgy Meeting was rescheduled for September 8, 2008, at 7 pm.
Finance council meets every 3rd Thursday.
Policies and Procedures were passed out to Parish Members for review. Please pass corrections and suggestions to JoAnn Durham before the next meeting.
The questions was brought up as to whether or not the parish would require a group to hire a security guard IF there will be liquor (beer and/or wine) present at a function. After much discussion (and a few incidents over the last year), it was decided that a fee of $150 would be charged for any function in Groups C & F if they serve alcohol. The church would then hire a private security agency to be present at the function.
Sister Jane gave her report (see attached) and has completed her second year in the Parish. Yipee!!!
Father reported that he has been at the Parish for 9 years.
NOVEMBER 1, 2008, the NEW Archbishop will be visiting the Parish. Mark your calendars and plan on giving him a warm welcome.
Joseph Owens has returned for his second year in the seminary in Louisiana.
Zachary Greenwell has started his first year in the seminary in Minnesota.
Kathryn Denny-Anderson has decided to step down from the Parish Council and an individual will be identified to finish out her year. We also need another member who will fill a full-term position on the council. The next Pastoral Council Meeting will be September 23, 2008.
The closing prayer was led by Larry Skeens.
Meeting adjourned at 8:51 pm.
